Ten years ago, Amazon unleashed a new technology that did not raise a great deal of popular interest at the time:  "the cloud," a name for virtual servers that could be accessed anywhere there was a WiFi connection.  While many people in 2006 were slow to see the possibilities of the cloud, in 2015 there is no doubt:  cloud computing is the future of data management.

Since Then . . .

Back in 2006, the cloud seemed something of a novelty, primarily designed for Amazon customers to be able to use their Kindles anywhere they wanted to download media.  Technophiles loved the concept, but many were slow to realize the true impact of cloud computing:  software and data that could be made available anywhere on the globe without carrying around tons of hardware and software. A few visionaries were quick to jump on the cloud bandwagon.  Netflix and Dropbox, for example, were companies that have blossomed under the cloud.  However, banks, government agencies and others were skeptical of the security of cloud-based services.  It did not help that many "private cloud" enterprises were failures.  In fact, on-site computing is still the primary choice for companies who have dabbled in setting up their own cloud services, mostly because they found that managing their own cloud was too cost-prohibitive and time consuming. Most private cloud services were based on OpenStack, and users found that these setups were difficult and expensive.  Therefore, many companies that tried the private cloud are now moving to public domains, especially since security has been tightened in the wake of several successful hacking ventures.
