Microsoft pushed out cumulative updates or CUs for both SharePoint Server 2013 and SharePoint Server 2010, according to recent reports. These updates require clients to have the latest service packs installed before they can apply their CUs. For SharePoint 2013, clients must have Service Pack 1, and for SharePoint 2010, they must have Service Pack 2 installed.

SharePoint 2013 CU Lacks Uber Package

Unlike other SharePoint updates, SharePoint 2013 CU lacks the "uber package" that contains fixes for all SharePoint server components. Microsoft calls these types of updates "mini-service packs." An uber package for SharePoint 2013 may be distributed in the future, so for organizations whose SharePoint farms are working without issue, it may be better to wait for the update until it arrives.

Hold Off On That Update

Microsoft generally advises avoiding installing CUs unless something is not working in the environment. Unlike some other updates, CUs cannot be uninstalled. One workaround suggested for SharePoint 2013 CU is installing the prior CU, which was released in August 2015, first. While this may work for some, others may find that they have to run the installer three times for the program to work due to a passive switch in installation script.

SharePoint 2010 Update Ready To Go

Unlike SharePoint 2013, the 2010 version of the CU does come with an included uber package. As long as the organization has Service Pack 2 installed, the package will update all SharePoint components correctly. After applying the CU for either 2010 or 2013, the Configuration Wizard must be run. There are two Wizards, PSCONFIG.EXE and PSCONFIGUI.EXE, available. The first offers more granular control by users, but the second offers a step-by-step tool.
